Measure the piece, then the box
A gift box that is too big lets the piece slide into a corner on the way. One that is too small folds a chain into a knot or presses a bangle against the lid. Both problems show up at the worst moment, when the lid opens.
So start with the jewelry, not the box. Lay the piece flat on a table. Measure a chain from clasp to clasp, a bangle across its widest point, and a pendant from the top of the bail to the bottom of the drop. A ring needs no tape measure at all, only a look at how wide the band is.
Every size on our product pages is the outside of the box. The inside is a little smaller on each side, because of the shell and the lining, so leave some room rather than choosing a box that matches the piece to the fraction of an inch.
| Piece | What to measure | Box to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Ring | Band width | Ring box, 2 to 2.8 inches, or a double box for two rings |
| Stud earrings | Nothing, studs fit any earring box | Stud earring box |
| Pendant | Bail to bottom of the drop | Pendant box, about 4 inches long |
| Long chain | Clasp to clasp | Long box, 8.6 to 9.25 inches |
| Bangle or watch | Widest point across | Square box, 3.5 to 4 inches |
| Necklace, earrings and ring | Longest piece | Set box, 6.7 by 4.7 inches or larger |
Rings and studs
A ring box holds the band upright in a slit, so the stone faces whoever opens the lid. That works for a slim band and for most engagement rings. Our ring boxes run from about 2 to 2.8 inches on their longest side, in velvet, wood and lit versions.
Two rings want two slits. The heart LED double ring box and the wooden double wedding ring box both put a pair of bands side by side, and the velvet double ring boxes come in sets of six for a wedding party.
Studs are the easiest gift to box. Any earring box takes a pair, and the small LED stud earring boxes are the same size as the LED ring boxes. A drop earring or a larger hoop is happier in the heart LED earring box, which is 3.35 inches across.
Pendants
A pendant box is built around a raised velvet pad in the base. The pendant hangs from the top of the pad and the chain gathers behind it, so the pendant is the first thing that shows. Our velvet pendant boxes are about 4 by 2.8 inches.
Measure the drop before you choose. A long drop or a large charm can reach the bottom edge of the pad, and then a set box or a long box shows it better.
For more than one pendant, the velvet pendant boxes come in sets of two, three and six in one color. That keeps a gift for a mother and two daughters looking like one gift.
Long chains
A chain coiled tightly into a small box can kink at the bends and knot around itself on the way. A long box avoids that by letting the chain lie out straight.
The velvet long chain boxes are 8.6 and 8.7 inches long and just over two inches wide. The LED long chain boxes are slightly longer, at 9 and 9.25 inches, and a light comes on when they open. A chain longer than the box folds once at the middle, with the fold under the pendant or the clasp. One fold is fine. Several are what cause the tangle.
Bracelets, bangles and watches
A bracelet box is square because a bangle is round. Our velvet bracelet boxes are 3.6 inches square on the outside, and the LED bracelet boxes range from 3.5 to 4 inches.
Measure the bangle across. Most bangles and a watch on its strap fit the velvet box with room to lift them out. A wide cuff, or a bangle that measures close to three inches across, belongs in the four-inch LED bracelet box, where it will not press against the lid.
Several pieces in one gift
When the gift is a necklace with matching earrings and a ring, a set box shows them together the way they were bought. Our set boxes come in four shapes: 6.7 by 4.7 inches for a lighter set, a 7.5-inch square, and octagonal and heart-shaped boxes close to eight inches across for a pearl strand or a chunky necklace.
The other way is a set of matching single boxes. The velvet boxes come in sets of two, three, four and six in one shape and one color, so the pieces can be opened one at a time. A ring and earrings can also go in the LED pair, two lit boxes in the same color.
